What We Do
Arthritis New Zealand aims to improve the life of every person affected by arthritis. We are a national not-for-profit organisation focused on raising awareness, promoting research, advocating for those with arthritis, and providing advice and support. We have represented the interests of New Zealanders with arthritis for more than 50 years.
Arthritis affects at least 647,000 New Zealanders making it a leading cause of disability among adults.
People with arthritis can experience difficulty with a variety of everyday tasks. Routine tasks such as opening containers can also cause pain. Accessible packaging is an ongoing challenge for people with arthritis, and others. Our recent research shows that there are difficulties across a range of products, particularly tear-open packaging, milk containers, medication and tight lids on jars.
Accessible design is about making products and packaging manageable for the entire community. Products that are easy for individuals with arthritis to use will also be easy to use for most of the rest of the population. We are hoping businesses might review and improve their packaging.
